What is REN?

Ren is an open protocol designed to facilitate the transfer of value between blockchains. Its core innovation is the RenVM, a decentralized network of computers that runs a Dark Pool, a type of zero-knowledge proof-based virtual machine. This allows users to mint "wrapped" tokens on one blockchain that represent assets locked on another. For example, users can lock Bitcoin on the Bitcoin blockchain and mint renBTC on Ethereum, enabling Bitcoin to be used in Ethereum's decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem without relying on centralized custodians. Ren employs a Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism for its validator nodes to secure the network and process transactions. The primary problem Ren aims to solve is the fragmentation of the blockchain ecosystem. By enabling interoperability, it allows assets to move freely across different networks, unlocking liquidity and expanding the reach of DeFi applications. This increases capital efficiency and offers users greater flexibility in managing their digital assets.
